Lights, Music — Community Action!

Christmas light and music show Lights on Decatur in Cane Bay benefits Lowcountry Food Bank.

The desire to synchronize a Christmas light show with music seized Cane Bay resident Bob Wingert back in 2007.

"The house before, we would just sling up some lights and be done with it," Wingert said. But a chance viewing of a segment on "Good Morning America" on a light show timed to music — followed by hours of watching Youtube videos — inspired Wingert to go all-out.

And, so far, the neighbors haven't complained. Just the opposite: Thursday evening, one neighbor stopped by to drop off a lighted reindeer to add to the display.

Now, five years running, Lights on Decatur attracts visitors to the Cane Bay home to watch the LED lights timed with Christmas and pop music (Ever wonder what Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" would look like in Christmas lights?). Wingert has 56 songs in the show's repertoire — each minute of a song equalling eight hours of painstaking work, he said.

It's not all flash and music though. The Wingerts accept donations for the Lowcountry Food Bank. After the 2011 Christmas season, the light show brought in more than 860 pounds of food to the nonprofit.

"We surpass it each year," wife Bridgette Wingert said. "We need to get the word out there."

The Wingerts also chose to use red, white and blue lights in honor of men and women in the U.S. military.

It takes about two weeks for the Wingerts to set up their front lawn and house for the Christmas season. And if you're worried about their electric bill, Bob Wingert said the LED lights mean very low voltage use by the show. He said he still pays less on his electric bill than during the summertime. And the Christmas tree on the front lawn? That's a magnolia tree, cut into the shape of a conifer just for the show.

Want to watch the light show? Show begins at 5:40 p.m. every evening now through Jan. 15. Show ends at 10 p.m. The house is located at 391 Decatur Drive in Cane Bay. Bring a canned food item to donate. Click here to learn more.
