Quake Rumbles off of Highway 61 Monday

A small 1.9 magnitude earthquake stikes along the Middleton fault.

SUMMERVILLE — At about 11:45 a.m. Monday, a small 1.9 quake rumbled along the Middleton fault off of Dogwood Ridge Road off of Highway 61.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake comes just a day before the 52nd anniversary of the largest recorded earthquake in the world was a magnitude 9.5 in Chile.

The active Middleton fault started 2012 to an active start, but has remained relatively quiet in recent months. The largest quake along this fault was registered in 1886 but most of the rumblings here are small and go unfelt. Last August, .
