School Crime Report: 'Slap Boxing' or Bullying?

Summerville High, Dubose Middle, Ashley Ridge High, Summerville Elementary and Alston Middle have incidents reported with Dorchester County Sheriff's Office and Summerville Police.

A 16-year-old Summerville High student and his mother claim an incident deemed by school officials as "slap boxing" or horseplay was actually bullying, according to a Summerville Police report.

According to the report, on Oct. 5, the student is seen on surveillance video engaging in slap boxing, also known as play fighting, and laughing with friends. The student and the other student in the video were suspended. Three witnesses confirmed to authorities that the horseplay was mutual, according to the report.

But the student and mother tell a different tale in the report. The student told officers he felt bullied during and prior to the incident by the other student, but that he didn't go to a teacher because the subject was his friend.
