Whisper and Traveler's Former Pasture Mate Dies in Wreck

Traffic collision near Jedburg Road kills horse, owned by man who pleaded guilty to charges of neglect earlier this year.

The man convicted of neglecting two horses has lost a horse in his possession due to a traffic collision Sunday night, which killed the equine, the Journal Scene reported

According to the media outlet, Dwight McCloud's horse was struck by a single driver, who was not injured in the wreck, but whose vehicle suffered $2,000 in damage. 

Two of McCloud's four horses, Whisper and Traveler, were seized earlier this year on neglect charges. Both animals were starved and one had severe burns. .

One of the two remaining horses got out under unknown circumstances Sunday and was hit by a 2008 Ford SUV, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol Cpl. Bob Beres.

“There’s a vehicle that was traveling east on Old Dairy Road and the horse ran into the roadway in front of the unit and collided with the vehicle,” Beres said. “I don’t know what the situation was, but the horse got out.”

By Tuesday afternoon, the Lowcountry equine community had begun rallying around LEARN's calls to take the surviving animal. According to sources, LEARN's Elizabeth Steed has offered to buy the horse for $500 from McCloud but has been declined. 

There are calls on Facebook to contact Berkeley County government to demand animal control intervene. 

Updated 6:30 p.m. Sept. 25 to add information about efforts to remove the remaining horse.
