Your View: Voting Went Smoothly on Tuesday

One machine still holding data from voters in Delemars precinct as of Wednesday afternoon.

Some voters waited in line for more than two hours, results took hours to load and one machine is still holding votes from the Delemars precinct as of Wednesday afternoon after Tuesday's general election here in Dorchester County.

A few voters, after waiting in line for hours, would check in only to find out they were at the wrong polling location, adding to the frustration.

But Dorchester County Board of Elections and Voter Registration Director Joshua Dickard said it wasn't that bad and he's confident in the results his office has counted.

"Even with issues, we're confident the results are correct," Dickard said, adding that there were no errors or missing data.

Contrary to what many voters might have been thinking Tuesday, he said the biggest hiccup of the day was voters changing their voting information via the DMV and it not being updated in the system. Dickard estimated his office fielded somewhere around 100 phone calls on that issue.

"That's a state issue," he said. Dickard said those that could not be verified were able to vote provisionally, adding that no one was turned away who could be helped. "My hope is (the state DMV) will look into streamlining the process."

As for the long lines, Dickard said that couldn't be helped. While the turnout was much lower than anticipated — turnout numbers are around 64.5 percent versus 71 percent in 2008 — the long lines were inevitable. Precincts were changed prior to the 2010 election, and it would have been chaos to change it again before the 2012 general electon to try to lessen the lines, Dickard said.

"We looked into that this year but there was no way I'd make that change during a general election year," he said. Dickard said the county election board will address precinct changes, to keep voting lines shorter, in January.

The question: Did voting go smoothly for you? What would you like to see done differently, if anything?
