American Spiritual Ensemble Coming To BJU

In time for Black History Month, the vocal group is taking the heritage of the negro spiritual to Greenville.

Critically-acclaimed professional music group The American Spiritual Ensemble will perform renditions of classic spirituals and Broadway numbers at 8 p.m. on Feb. 16 at Bob Jones University.

The event will be held at the Founder’s Memorial Amphitorium. The concert is open to the public, and tickets are available at bju.edu/tickets or by calling (864) 770-1372.

“We are privileged to welcome The American Spiritual Ensemble to BJU,” said Darren Lawson, dean of the School of Fine Arts and Communication for BJU. “This stellar group has performed around the world and is composed of powerful and capable vocalists individually. Their combined passion and blend provides what will be a thrilling night of world-class music.”

Among the selections listed to be performed are “Jacobs Ladder,” “Ezekiel Saw de Wheel,” “Bring Him Home” from “Les Miserables” and “Over the Rainbow” from “The Wizard of Oz.” The BJU Chorale will join the group for the final two numbers of the concert – “Keep Marchin 'Til I Get Home” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”

The American Spiritual Ensemble was founded by Dr. Everett McCorvey in 1995, and its mission is to keep the American negro spiritual alive. Its members have sung in theaters and opera houses around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera and Houston Grand Opera and abroad in Italy, Germany, Britain, Scotland, Spain and Japan. The repertoire of the American Spiritual Ensemble ranges from opera to spirituals to Broadway. The members of the American Spiritual Ensemble are soloists in their own right and have thrilled audiences around the world with their dynamic renditions of spirituals and numbers highlighting the Black experience.

Ticket prices are $30 for adults who wish to sit in the front sections and $25 for rear sections, full-time students are $12 for all sections and part-time students are $15 for all sections.
