Meridian, which purchased ACE Environmental earlier this year and assumed its collections in the City of Greer, will now collect curbside waste five days per week instead of the current three-day schedule. The changes will affect approximately 36% of city households.

“I’ve always been a big proponent of being here every day. That way, if something happens, we’ll be here and more responsive,” Meridian COO Dave Lavender said. “We’re going to be putting some additional equipment here so we can anticipate and be ready for the growth, which is very important. But we’re not going to change any of the services, so everyone will still have the same garbage, recycling and yard waste picked up in the same day. We’re just going to be moving a few routes so they’ll be picked up on Thursday and Friday.”

Residents will bear no additional expenses and Meridian is planning a two-tiered system to inform the approximately 4,500 households which will have a new collection day. Postcards will be mailed to affected residents the week of Aug. 16 and Meridian will be placing reminder hangers on their roll carts the week of Aug. 23.

Households that are unaffected by the new schedule will not receive notifications and should continue their current procedures for collections.

Lavender said Meridian will bring in extra supervisors to help make the transition easier.

“We have the capabilities and resources now to really enhance what we can do for Greer,” he said. “As the growth comes, we’re not going to have to come back in a year or a year and a half and say we need to reroute. We’re very levelled out now. We’re anticipating the growth coming over the next couple of years so we’ll be able to just push a little bit more onto those existing routes.”

Two holidays, Labor Day and Thanksgiving, will impact the collection schedule during the remaining 2021 calendar year. Collection will be one day later than normal for all residents during Labor Day week. For residents with Thursday and Friday collections only, collections will move to the Friday and Saturday following Thanksgiving Day.
