Classic Cars to Hit Track at Greer Dragway Saturday

The Nostalgia Gasser Race will take fans back to the 1960s racing era, track owner Mike Greer said.

Take a step back in time Saturday.

Vintage cars from the 1960s racing era will take to the track at Greer Dragway for a day of door-slamming racing.

Track Owner Mike Greer said that the track started holding the event four or five years ago and that each year it gets a little bigger.

"We've got 14 Gassers coming out," Greer said. "One of these vehicles hadn't been run in 40 years and has been restored to period correctness."

Greer said Greg Porter of Easley had been the one to get the race started and that period correctness was one of the biggest components that Porter had stressed in the event.

"In order for a driver to compete, everything on the vehicle has to resemble parts used in the '60s," Greer said. "They can't have anything modern on these cars."

Greer said that even the interior is expected to be styled in the same way. Each vehicle in the race would be judged by a three-person panel before hitting the track.

The vehicles will run a Chicago-style qualifying race, each car will be timed and then paired with a car closest to their time for a race. Greer said the next round, the winning car will be paired with the next fastest time, until all but two cars are eliminated.

"To have this many period-correct cars is going to be something to see," Greer said.

During Saturday's event, former dragster Gene Cromer will unveil his A/G Willys. It's the first time the car has been on a track in 40 years.

Quain Stott, Jeremy Pearson, Greg Porter and Cromer are all expected to race Saturday. Following the Gassers event, IHRA Summit SuperSeries Bracket race will be held.

Gates open at 11 a.m. Eliminations start at 4 p.m.

Admission is $12 for adults and $3 for children ages 6-11.
