Deputy Involved in Vehicle Chase that Resulted in Fatality Followed Proper Procedure
The Greenville County Sheriff's Office said that following an internal review of the pursuit, the deputy involved had acted within proper policy and procedure.

The Greenville County Sheriff's Office said an internal investigation found that their deputy acted within proper policy and procedure on Oct. 28, 2011, when he became involved with a vehicle pursuit that resulted in a fatality.
The deputy was acting on a tip that the Sheriff's Office personnel had received regarding the whereabouts of , who had been the subject of a 12-hour manhunt, after he fired shots at Greenville police officers, Taci Cobb and Charles Lane on Friday morning at Berkley Pointe Apartments.
Deputies said they had been told that Lowrance was possibly in a white, Ford Crown Victoria.

When the deputy activated his emergency equipment and attempted to stop the vehicle in question, the occupant drove away at a high rate of speed, the Sheriff's Office said.
The deputy lost sight of the vehicle, but later found the car had been involved in a single-vehicle crash on Henderson Avenue and the driver had been killed.

Deputy Coroner Jeff Fowler has identified the driver as 34-year-old Derrek Smith.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
