In 1943, a little girl named Dorie Cooper was visiting an uncle who had been injured in the war. He was very distraught over his injuries and Cooper wanted to cheer him up. He finally drew a picture of a robin for her. She told him he wasn't a very good artist, but that she would hang the picture up in her room regardless of what it looked like. The uncle appreciated her honesty and her understanding.

Now celebrated worldwide, the day expresses joy in the very simplest of things.
