Eastside's Erwin Named 3A Coach of Year

Kyle Van Hoff, a pitcher and center fielder for the Eagles, has been named to the All-State Team.

Eagle pride surrounds Eastside High School Tuesday afternoon as a coach and a student are honored by the South Carolina Baseball Coaches Association.

Scott Erwin, the school's head baseball coach, has been named the 3A Coach of the Year. Erwin said he was both stunned and shocked when he learned about the honor.

"I'm very, very pleased," Erwin said during a phone interview. "I didn't know until about an hour ago. People started sending me messages to congratulate me. They had heard before I had."

Erwin, who has coached at the school for 15 years and served as head coach for 13, said he is very proud of his baseball team this year.

"They're the reason for this," Erwin said. "They're out there putting in the hard work for me."

The Eagles made it to the Upper State playoff game this season, but suffered a heartbreaking, 4-3 loss to A.C. Flora.

"They competed every day," Erwin said. "They worked hard, that was never an issue."

Erwin said that Eastside always has a lot of talent on this team, but he said this year was different.

"These guys got along so well," Erwin said. "We were a true team this year and that really helped."

Leading this year's Eagles were five seniors, one of which has been named a standout by the coaches' association.

Senior Kyle Van Hoff has been named to the 3A All-State Team. A two-sport athlete, Van Hoff played both basketball and baseball for Eastside.

Erwin said that Van Hoff is a natural athlete and was more focused this year than he's ever been.

"Kyle is one of those kids who when you look at him, you wonder if he's giving you 100 percent," Erwin said. "He's a natural. Everything just flows so easy for him."

Erwin said he was excited to see Van Hoff was honored.
