Enthusiasts Meet for Cars, Coffee, Camaraderie Saturday

Cars & Coffee of the Upstate is celebrating its second anniversary.

John Budinich doesn't just like cars, he loves them.

A car enthusiast since he was a teen, Budinich knew he wasn't the only one with a passion for automobiles of all makes and models.

Two years ago, Budinich started emailing friends and area auto clubs trying to put together a gathering of friends to meet for coffee and to show off their cars.

Each fourth Saturday of the month, including this Saturday, the group meets from 8 to 11 a.m. at North Hills Shopping Center, 2431 E. North St., Greenville.

"It looks like it may pour down rain Saturday, but people will still be there," Budinich said. "Light rain doesn't chase them away, some will stand and talk in the rain, even without umbrellas.  When it comes down harder, we go drink coffee in the neighboring restaurants."

Budinich said the gathering is very informal. There's no required dues, no rules for display and anyone is invited to participate.

"I think that's why it's continued to grow," Budinich said. "We have anywhere from 74 to 190 cars that turn out. It's more fun this way. It's a hobby for most of us."

Budinich said that some members travel from Asheville, Spartanburg and Columbia to hang out with other car enthusiasts.

"And age doesn't seem to matter," Budinich said. "Last month we had a group of 17 year olds up under the hood of a Model A Ford and talking to a 75-year-old man."

From exotics like Ferraris and Aston Martins to Hondas and Chevys, Budinich said he loves to see who show ups and what they're driving.

"I like to take pictures of all the cars and post them on our Facebook page, it keeps them talking until we meet again," Budinich said. "You never know what kind of cars will be there, but that's part of the fun."
