PHOTO GALLERY: Fallen Officers Honored at Special Service in Greenville County

Greenville County honored the lives of fallen officers during an annual memorial service at the at the Greenville County Law Enforcement Center.

Family members of Greenville Police Chief J.F. Holcombe who was killed in the line of duty in 1915 attend the ceremony each year.

Holcombe's great-granddaughter said that Chief Holcombe along with other officers were attempting to arrest a man who had reportedly killed his wife.

Holcombe was shot during the arrest attempt, while entering the window of a home where the suspect had barricaded himself. The Chief would later succomb to his injuries and died of medical complications on May 30, 1915.

"I have a picture at home and you can see the man in handcuffs," said Mary Hartin, who has kept the picture that had been among some of her grandmother's things.

Bobby Taylor said that he and his mother come each year to the event.

"We appreciate what they do to remember each of these officers each year," Taylor said. "We haven't missed any of the services."

After opening remarks at the service, Chief Terri Wilfong of Greenville Police Department, read each of the names of the fallen officers.

The Greenville Police Honor Guard raised and then lowered the flag to half mast as "Taps" was played.
