Furman President to Step Down

Rod Smolla will leave the position as of June 30 for personal reasons, according to news reports.

Furman University President Rod Smolla will step down June 30.

According to several media reports, Smolla, the university's 11th president, is stepping aside for personal reasons.

According to the University's website, Carl F. Kohrt, Ph.D., has been selected as the Interim President effective July 1, 2013.

A native of Tuscola, Illinois, Dr. Kohrt is a successful business executive. He was graduated magna cum laude from Furman in 1965 with a B.S. degree in chemistry, and earned a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Chicago and a Master’s degree in Management Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Kohrt is the lead director of Scotts Miracle Gro Company and is a director of the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation.
