Greer Councilman Honored for 30 Years as Volunteer Firefighter

Jay Arrowood has retired as a volunteer from the City of Greer Fire Department. Arrowood began working as a volunteer when he was 18 years old.

A Greer City Councilman was honored Tuesday for his work volunteering in the community.

Since Jay Arrowood was 18 years old, he's served the City of Greer — not only as a member of City Council, but also as a volunteer firefighter.

Arrowood began working as a volunteer with Greer Fire Department on April 13, 1983. After 30 years of service, Arrowood's "fire unit 87 is now 10-7," out of service.

Arrowood, joined by his wife, Lisa, and his two children, A.J. and Jay, as well as his mom and dad, accepted a proclamation from the city, as well as a gift from City Council marking his retirement April 13, 2013.

"Thirty years looking out, you think I'll never make 30 years," Arrowood said. "But looking back, it went by very, very fast."

Arrowood said in 30 years a lot had changed in the fire service. From the volume of calls to the number of faces and from the technology and equipment, he said one thing has remained the same, "the ability to handle any situation that may arise from rescue call, fire, hazmat, Greer Fire Department is there and is very, very capable of handling anything thrown our way."
