UPDATE: It's A Giraffe!

The long-awaited arrival of the Greenville Zoo's baby giraffe is finally over.

UPDATED: 1:02 a.m. Oct. 23

It took quite a while, but the little giraffe finally started walking around shortly before 1 a.m.

It takes a while to learn to coordinate those long legs and to get them moving all in the same direction.

The Greenville Zoo officially welcomed its first baby giraffe Monday.

Born at 11:49 p.m., the newborn is the first child of Autumn and Walter.

Autumn and her mate, Walter, are on a breeding loan to the Greenville Zoo. As part of the loan, Autumn came to the zoo from the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston in 2007 to be paired with the zoo’s male giraffe, Walter, 7, from the San Diego Zoo.

The two giraffes have become an overnight reality sensation as people from all over the globe have been monitoring Autumn's progress over the past few weeks.

The average gestation for a giraffe is 15 months. The female is standing when she delivers the calf. Baby giraffes normally will be around six-feet-tall and weigh around 150 pounds at birth.
