Legality Of Gaming Machine Questioned In Magistrate Court

Judge Charlie Garrett is considering whether or not a gaming machine set up at a local business should be considered illegal gambling.

A Greenville County judge will be responsible for deciding whether or not a gaming machine seized from a local convenience store is legal, WYFF reports.

The machine was seized last year, and includes keno, slots and poker, distributing redeemable coupons as prizes. Instead of video poker, the games are known as "sweepstakes machines."

The Attorney General's Office claims that the payouts make the machines a video gambling operation, which was outlawed more than a decade ago in South Carolina

Garrett has already ruled that the machine in question is legal, but the decision was appealed to circuit court, which subsequently sent the case back to the magistrate court. A decision is expected by Sept. 15.
