Man Killed In Officer-Involved Shooting

An unidentified man is dead after a Greenville County Sheriff's deputy shot and killed him after he reportedly held a knife to a woman's neck in the Sans Souci area of Greenville. 

Laura Campbell, spokesperson for the GCSO, said that at 2:30 p.m. a 911 call was made requesting response to 213 Brockman Avenue in reference to a disturbance there. 

Before deputies could arrive on scene, however, a male and a female left that location, and later information received by the authorities indicated that the male was holding the female at knife point as she was driving. 

"Deputies were able to locate the vehicle and follow it from a safe distance due to the male passenger still holding the female at knife point," Campbell said. "Deputies were able to safely stop the vehicle near the intersection of Abney Street and Draper Street."

At that intersection, deputies reportedly verbally commanded the male suspect, later identified as 56-year-old David Scott Hampton, to drop the knife, which was at the neck of the female driver. Hampton apparently refused to do so, and a deputy, whose identify has yet to be released, fired multiple rounds at the suspect, killing him. 

The shooting is still under investigation.
