Retired Taylors Couple Wins $100,000 in S.C. Education Lottery

A retired couple from Taylors returned from errands $100,000 richer.

The man bought bought his wife a $5 lottery ticket to scratch off at a convenience store before returning from running errands, but after she won he decided he wanted it back.

“I’ve got a winner, but I don’t believe it,” she told her husband, who was driving them home.

When her husband reached for the ticket, a Muscle Car Money scratch-off, he saw that it was worth $100,000.

Still in disbelief that they had actually won, the couple drove back to the Food Shop in Marietta. The clerk who had sold the ticket was able to confirm the couple had won, according to lottery officials.

The couple told lottery officials that people in the store began to shake the man's hand and to congratulate him on his winnings.

The man said when they got home, he placed the winning ticket in his dresser drawer for safekeeping, but his wife disagreed with him.

“My wife didn’t think that was a safe place, so she put it in her pocketbook,” he said.

The man said that his wife started spending the money in her mind right away, adding that she wanted new paint for the house, refinished floors and gifts for the grandkids. 

The man said he simply thought about a new truck and more breakfast trips to McDonalds with the family.

“I wonder if I’ll be stingy with it,” his wife joked, as they waited for their check at the claims office in Columbia.

Food Shop in Marietta received a commission of $1,000 for selling the winning ticket.
