SCSO: Man Charged with Sexually Assaulting 5-Year-Old

Spartanburg County Sheriff's deputies have arrested and charged a Spartanburg man with sexually assaulting a 5-year-old girl.

The alleged incident was reported to authorities by the Child Advocacy Center, which deemed the girl's description of the alleged sexual assault credible, according to media reports.

Deputies charged 34-year-old Jeffrey Jay Martin, of 36 Saxon Heights in Spartanburg, with first-degree criminal sexual assault with a minor younger than 11.

According to his arrest warrant, Martin had sex with the child between April 2008 and March 2013. Deputies said Martin knew the child, Fox Carolina reported.

Martin was being held Friday at the Spartanburg County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
