South Carolina Holds Earthquake Drill Thursday

South Carolina will hold an earthquake drill Thursday.

The Great Southeast ShakeOut will be held at 10:18 a.m. as part of an emergency preparedness drill sponsored by South Carolina Emergency Management Division as part of South Carolina Earthquake Awareness Week.

A NOAA tone-alert will be broadcast on weather radio and through broadcast media for at least 60 seconds. Participants are asked to drop, cover and hold on as if an earthquake was occurring.

According to SCEMD, the largest earthquake recorded on the eastern seaboard occurred in 1886 with a magnitude of 7.3 on the Mercali Scale. Its epicenter was in Summerville and was felt from Chicago to Cuba. Currently, South Carolina experiences 10 to 20 measurable earthquakes a year according to geologists with the College of Charleston.
