Speak Out: Should Gay, Lesbian Couples Be Able to Marry in Upstate?

Friday morning six couples attempted to obtain a marriage license at Greenville County Square.

A half dozen gay and lesbian couples attempted to obtain a marriage license at Greenville County Square Friday morning.

The Greenville News reported that more than 100 people turned out in support of the couples who were denied the right to apply for a marriage license.

The event was aimed at drawing attention to South Carolina’s marriage laws, which allow only heterosexual couples to marry. Organized by the Campaign for Southern Equality, Greenville was the fourth of nine stops at courthouses in six states.

According to the organization's website, the WE DO Campaign will continue to grow across the South until lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people achieve full equality under federal law.
