Traffic stood still for an hour and three people were airlifted to the hospital Tuesday afternoon after a three-vehicle accident on Interstate 85.
At roughly 4:30 p.m., a collision involving a tractor-trailer and two sports-utility vehicles prompted EMS, S.C. Highway Patrol and multiple fire departments to the southbound lane of I-85 at mile marker 60, which is close to the BMW plant at Highway 101.

According to Lance Cpl. Bill Rhyne of S.C. Highway Patrol, the collision occurred when Charles Grainger, 38, of Simpsonville, attempted to switch lanes in his Tahoe and clipped 56-year-old Sidney Rudd's Hyundai SUV, which had been parked at the side of the road in the emergency lane.
The initial collision overturned Rudd's vehicle, and sent Grainger's SUV spinning back into traffic, then striking a tractor-trailer being driven by Phillip Munson.
The female passenger in Grainger's car, Nicole Grainger, 37, was not restrained and was ejected from the vehicle, Rhyne said.
Grainger and Rudd were both airlifted to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center for their injuries. Munson was uninjured, and Charles Grainger, who was also taken to the hospital, was cited for driving too fast for conditions.
Highway Patrol is still investigating the incident.
