George Hincapie, who calls Greenville home, participated in his last competitive cycling race.

George Hincapie has raced his last pro cycling event, WYFF reports.

Hincapie, who lives in Greenville, ended his cycling career Sunday in Colorado. His career began in 1994, and in his 18 years as a pro athlete he won the US Pro Championship, and finished a record 17 Tour of Flanders and Tour de France races.

On Oct. 27, an event will be held to celebrate Hincapie's career at La Bastide, in the Travelers Rest area, where people of all ages can ride the scenic area and take advantage of exhibitors, food vendors and local bands. For more information and to register, visit GranFondoHincapie.com.

“It's all I've done for such a long time. 30 years now riding, almost 20 professionally. I will miss the sport a lot and hope to stay close to it in some respects, but I'm also excited to be more of a family man, spend more time with my kids, my wife and everybody at home,” Hincapie said.

Hincapie has remained silent so far about his former teammate for doping allegations.
