UPDATE: USC Quarterbacks Coach Apologizes

Mangus releases a statement, says he acted irresponsibly

University of South Carolina football takes another hit, but this time it's a member of the coaching staff who was arrested.

Quarterbacks coach George "G.A." Mangus, 42, of Columbia was arrested early Tuesday morning outside of the Carolina Ale House, 113 S. Main St. in Greenville, after officers reported they saw him urinating on the curb outside the building as they were driving by in an unmarked patrol car.

University of South Carolina said that Mangus has been suspended indefinitely from the football program, according to a news release from the school.

“G.A. has been suspended from all coaching activities until this matter is resolved,” said Coach Steve Spurrier. “We are disappointed in his actions and will handle it accordingly.”

Greenville Police arrested him about 1:30 a.m., according to the report (see at right), after seeing Mangus facing Main Street and urinating on the street and the curb. Officers said when they approached, Mangus appeared to be unsteady on his feet and smelled of alcohol.

This afternoon Mangus issued this apology to those connected to the university:

“Last night I acted irresponsibly and I deeply regret my actions. I take full responsibility. I would like to publicly apologize to Coach Spurrier, Eric Hyman, the entire team, and everyone associated with the University of South Carolina.”

Mangus was charged with nuisance conduct and given a $470 fine. He was booked into the Greenville County Detention Center and was released on Tuesday.

He is expected to appear in front of Judge Matt Hawley in Greenville Municipal Court at 8 a.m. Aug. 26.
