VIDEO: Low Turnout Reported In Western Taylors, Stephens Surging

Precincts in western Taylors have experienced a low turnout so far in Tuesday's primary election. 

"Honestly, I don't think we've had very many. Certainly not as many as we saw in January," said Mountain Creek Precinct Poll Manager Michael Nuss, referencing the presidential preference primary earlier this year. 

Some four hours after the polls had opened, Mountain Creek had seen some 90 total voters out of a roll of roughly 2,300. Meanwhile, in Pebble Creek, a roll of nearly 2,000 voters had yielded only 50 voters. 

In both spots, many voters were reluctant to speak about their votes using their names, but still expressed an anti-incumbent sentiment that seemed to produce a surge for County Council Candidate Scott Stephens, who is running against Sid Cates. Every person questioned by Patch at Mountain Creek and Pebble Creek precincts voted for Stephens. 

"I voted for Scott primarily because of his business background," one voter said. 

At Pebble Creek precinct, Loretta Stephens, Scott's wife, was present outside the polling place, greeting voters. Stephens said her husband had so far knocked on 1,700 doors in heavy campaigning for the primary. 

"We've never done this before," Loretta said. "But we've gotten a lot of positive responses in our phone calls. I think we can give Sid a run for his money." 

Another voter speaking on the condition his name not be published said he voted for Chris Sullivan over Sen. Mike Fair in the Senate 6 race because he simply believed it was time for a change, and also said he voted for Stephens for the same reason. 

"I voted for Chris Sullivan and Scott Stephens primarily because they were the challengers, and I think it's important to get someone new in every once in a while, or politicians get complacent," he said. 

Another person voting at Pebble Creek, Todd Kilsdonk, voted for Sullivan and Stephens in their respective races as well.
