Newsweek's annual ranking of public high schools rates how well high schools are preparing students for college.

BRENTWOOD, TN — Two Brentwood area schools were among Newsweek's Top Public High Schools for 2016.

Newsweek looked at six measurements and weighted them to come up with a “college readiness index.” The rankings are meant to show how well high schools do at preparing students for college.

Ravenwood High School was ranked 87th in the nation and Brentwood High School ranked at No. 162.

“It is an honor for our schools to be recognized nationally for achievement and college readiness through the Newsweek rankings. While our community may know how hard our students, teachers and staff work to achieve academic excellence, it is nice to be acknowledged at the state and national level for our accomplishments,” Williamson County schools director Mike Looney said.

Another Nashville area school, Hume-Fogg Academic High School, finished at 96.

Also, there were 4,452 schools nationwide that were listed among those that are “beating the odds.” In that ranking, a school’s college readiness scores were adjusted for how they compared against other schools that had similar percentages of students eligible for free or reduced lunch.

Hume-Fogg also made that list, along with Westmoreland High School and seven other schools across the state.
