Interstate 24 Closure: 5 Miles Near Downtown Blocked This Weekend

NASHVILLE, TN — The five miles of Interstate 24 just across the river from downtown and near Nissan Stadium will be closed this weekend, the first of four weekend closures the Tennessee Department of Transportation plans as part of a $28.5 million rehab project.

The interstate between I-40 and I-65 will close 8 p.m. Friday and will reopen by 6 a.m. on Monday.

The three other closures are tentatively scheduled for:

• Friday, Oct. 6, 8 p.m. through Monday, Oct. 9, 6 a.m.
• Friday, Oct. 20, 8 p.m. through Monday, Oct. 23, 6 a.m.
• Friday, Oct. 27, 8 p.m., through Monday, Oct. 30, 6 a.m.

This weekend and the first two in October coincide with Tennessee Titans away games, while the last takes place during the team's bye week.

The closings are dependent on the weather, so TDOT will announce the Wednesday before the scheduled weekend if the closures will occur.

The $28.5 million project will replace the 56-year-old bridges that cross over Oldham Street and Spring Street on the eastern loop of downtown and include deck repairs to the Silliman Evans Bridge, as well as drainage work at the Shelby Avenue exit. The entire stretch of interstate will be resurfaced as part of the project.

The bridges will be replaced using Accelerated Bridge Construction method, which, while requiring periods of total road closure, allows crews to work around the clock. This cuts work-time down to a few weekends rather than, in some cases, years.
