ETSU Quillen College Of Medicine Co-Hosting Screening Of ‘Black Men In White Coats' On July 29

JOHNSON CITY – East Tennessee State University Quillen College of Medicine is partnering with Carver Recreation Center and the City of Johnson City to host a screening of “Black Men in White Coats,” a documentary that seeks to increase the number of black men in the field of medicine.

The free screening and discussion will be Thursday, July 29 from 6-8 p.m. at Carver Recreation Center, 322 W. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City.

It is open to people of all ages, and organizers hope that students, parents, grandparents, leaders and educators will attend. In addition to the movie, there will be refreshments and supervised entertainment for kids, including a splashpad and games.

“We are excited to be able to share this important movie with our community,” said Dr. Rick Wallace, associate director for evidence and outreach at Quillen College of Medicine. “The number of black men applying to medical school or matriculating has decreased in the past 36 years. In fact, fewer black men applied to medial school in 2014 than in 1978.

“The mission of ‘Black Men in White Coats’ is to bring awareness and to increase the number of black men in medicine through exposure, inspiration and mentoring.”
