A Bomb Threat Was Made To Texas Right To Life In Bellaire In The Wake Of The Abortion Ban

BELLAIRE, TX — Texas Right to Life in Bellaire received an emailed bomb threat Friday morning, but a suspicious package was found to be inert by Bellaire police, according to a tweet from the organization.

The non-profit, pro-life organization reported the threat just nine days after Senate Bill 8, The Heartbeat Bill, took effect Sept. 1. The new law bans abortions after the detection of a fetal heartbeat, which occurs as early as six weeks into a pregnancy. The law allows any person to sue an abortion provider or anyone who "aids or abets" an abortion suspected of violating the law for $10,000.

Texas Right to Life contacted the Bellaire Police Department about the threat at approximately 10:15 a.m. Friday.

Bellaire police evacuated the building at 4500 Bissonnet St. and later recovered a suspicious package as it was being delivered by the United States Postal Service. A bomb squad x-rayed the package and determined its contents were inert.

"Texas Right to Life did the right thing in contacting the police," Bellaire Police Chief Onesimo Lopez said in a statement. "It was fortunate that our officers were on scene when the suspicious package was delivered, and we appreciate the occupants of the building working with police to quickly clear out in the event that this was an actual bomb."

Making a bomb threat is considered a terroristic threat, a Class A misdemeanor that can carry a fine of up to $4,000 and a year in jail.

Texas Right to Life received a bomb threat & a suspicious package in our office today.

Police immediately came to the scene and evacuated everyone.
