Dear editor –

Almost every day I feel like I am hearing stories from family and friends about the hardships they have faced when dealing with their health insurance providers. I lost my own mother to complications from cancer treatments, and I’m deeply concerned about making sure that not only is funding and research for cancer continued and increased, but also that patients insurance providers don’t stand in the way of critical care and treatment. Even in the news here in Texas, we are seeing reports of companies having to pay for major mistakes.

It seems like more often than not, having insurance no longer guarantees full coverage of care. With dangerous policies like step-therapy, or even just flat out denial of coverage, patients and their families are left to come up with the cost of care on their own while still having to pay their expensive monthly premiums and yearly deductibles.

This is not how our healthcare system should work. I wish Congress had used this summer to pass bipartisan insurance reforms that could actually help, versus pushing through partisan measures in the Inflation Reduction Act.

I hope that moving forward, our elected officials will focus on solutions that help everyone. Our nation’s insurance industry needs some serious change in order to actually provide the health care services they are supposed to.
