Transformer Explodes At CenterPoint Facility In Texas City

Firefighters are battling a fire at the CenterPoint Facility in Texas City that was sparked by a transformer explosion.

TEXAS CITY, TX — Firefighters in Texas City are continuing to battle a massive fire at the CenterPointe complex.

Officials said the fire erupted after a transformer exploded at about 5 p.m. Tuesday, and was fed by oil that produced thick black smoke.

Officials advised residents to stay clear of the area near FM 517 and State Highway 146 while firefighters battled the blaze.

Shelter in place orders have not yet been issued, but according to a KTRK report, robocalls from the Texas City Office of Emergency Management went out to residents telling them to stay clear of the area.

Officials reported widespread power outages as a result of the explosion.

So far, no injuries have been reported.

Earlier, power outages in northwest Harris County left about 6,300 residents without power for just over an hour, but it’s not known if these incidents were connected.

Firefighters are waiting for the oil to burn off so they can extinguish the fire.
