Freeport ATM Users: Beware Of Skimmers; Here's What To Look For
Card skimmers have become popular ways for thieves to steal your information and your money. Freeport Police show you what to look for.
FREEPORT, TX – Thieves are using skimming devices and remote cameras at local ATMs that allow them to access credit card or ATM information, police said. The recent discovery of skimmers at one credit union in Freeport prompted police to warn residents.
Freeport Police Chief Ray Garivey posted a Facebook video Friday with one of his officers demonstrating the type of skimmers used by thieves to steal information when anyone is using their ATM.
Anyone who uses an ATM should check the card reader by physically by gently pulling on it before inserting your card. If the card reader comes off or is loose, it's a skimmer and police and bank personnel should be contacted, officials said. The video warned that thieves are placing a cover over the cash dispenser with a hidden camera allowing them to read your personal identification number.
