Did you know Salvatore and Rosario Maceo had a hand in the Pageant of Pulchritude, the predecessor of the Miss Universe Pageant, in addition to running the famed Balinese Room? Learn the truth about the Maceos during a presentation by Kimber Fountain, author of The Maceos and the Free State of Galveston, An Authorized History, on Thursday, June 27, at the Galveston County Museum, 722 21st Street. Fountain’s free 30-minute talk, sponsored by AMOCO Federal Credit Union, begins at 10 am and dives into the Maceos' influence on Galveston and Las Vegas.

For nearly forty years, the Maceos’ illegal gambling operations drove Galveston’s tourism industry with their glamorous clubs and other businesses. Their vision became a template for Las Vegas and the events they created gave Galveston international exposure. Through exclusive interviews with the Maceo family and historical research, Fountain sheds light on the family's permanent influence on Galveston and Galveston County.

After her presentation, Fountain will sell and sign copies of her book. Visitors are encouraged to tour the museum, which includes Galveston’s only exhibit about the famed Balinese Room and the county’s gambling history. The Museum recently added new artifacts to its gambling history area, including furniture, menus, images, and china from the Balinese Room.
