Santa Fe School Receives $1M Federal Grant For Shooting Recovery

"No student, parent or educator should have to experience the trauma suffered by so many at Santa Fe High School ...," Betsy DeVos said.

SANTA FE, TX — The U.S. Department of Education has awarded a $1 million grant to help the Santa Fe Independent School District recover from a mass shooting two weeks ago in which 10 people were killed and as many more were wounded. The announcement was made Thursday, the same day President Trump visited with families of those killed in the May 18 shooting rampage.

The federal money is provided under a Project School Emergency Response to Violent (SERV) grant from the Department of Education Office of Safe and Healthy Students.

“No student, parent or educator should have to experience the trauma suffered by so many at Santa Fe High School and other schools throughout the country,” Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said in a press release.

The Project SERV grants provide critical funding for school districts, colleges and universities that have experienced significant traumatic events and need resources to respond, recover and re-establish safe environments for students.

The Santa Fe school district received an Immediate Services grant, one of two types provided under the SERV program. It provides emergency, short-term assistance to affected school districts or colleges and universities.

Extended Services grants assist school districts and colleges and universities in carrying out the long-term recovery efforts that may be needed following a significant, traumatic event.

“Every day, the work of the Federal Commission on School Safety grows more urgent," DeVos said in the release. "We continue to focus on identifying proven ways to prevent violence and keep our students safe at school."
