1 in 3 Moms In Texas Struggle To Provide Diapers For Their Babies

National Diaper Need Awareness Week hopes to draw attention to the issue of diaper need in Austin and surrounding areas.

AUSTIN, TX — With an average monthly cost of $120, it's estimated that 1 in 3 mothers in Central Texas struggle to provide enough diapers for the month for their babies. Moreover, families on public assistance are not eligible to buy diapers with their food stamps (SNAP benefits). These statistics underscore the need to provide greater access to diapers as a basic health need in the community. As such, National Diaper Need Awareness Week taking place from Sept. 23 - Sept. 29 hopes to draw attention to the issue of diaper need and for solutions to be found.

Communities around the country are invited to participate in the event and participate in any way they are able. Some of these ways may include:

  • Host a diaper drive.
  • Volunteer at a local diaper bank.
  • Request proclamations from elected officials.
  • Engage in Real Talk on social media via #EndDiaperNeed and #BasicsArentBasic
  • Make a donation to NDBN and/or a local diaper program.

The Austin Diaper Bank works with partner agencies throughout the area providing assistance to low income families and individuals and relies on donations, diaper drives, and donated funds. To date, the Austin Diaper Bank has received 615,308 diapers for undeserved families and seeks the community's assistance to provide greater access for parents struggling to provide this basic need to their little one(s).
