3 Arrested In Killing Of North Austin Ice Cream Vendor

NORTH AUSTIN, TX — Three men have been arrested and charged with capital murder for the death of an ice cream vendor in June, the Austin Police Department said Monday.

Adelaido Bernabe Urias,68, was robbed and shot at the Serena Park Apartments on June 23, police previously said. A North Austin fixture as he sold his frozen treats to neighborhood children, Urias reportedly was pushing his cart through the complex when the suspects confronted him.

Urias was transported to a hospital for treatment of his injuries, but succumbed to his injuries more than a week later on June 2, police said.

Following the man's death, several groups contributed to form a reward for information leading to arrests that grew to $24,000. LULAC and the Austin Greater Crime Commission each contributed $10,000; Austin Cops for Charities pledged $2,000; the Austin Police Association and Amigos en Azul each pitched in $500; and Crime Stoppers offered a separate $1,000 reward.

Police provided no details on the arrests, and did not identify the suspects. Officials said more details would be released on Tuesday, including the suspects' booking photos. Patch will update when more information is shared.

A GoFundMe campaign was launched after the ice cream vendor's death to help defray funeral costs and related expenses. At last check, the campaign raised $62,017 of an original $10,000 goal.

On the page, his niece said Urias had worked 17 years at various spots across Austin to economically sustain his family in Mexico. "Everyone around the area knew him as a very cheerful and loving human being.," she wrote.
