ATX TV Festival Returns To Austin In June

The four-day celebration of television will feature panels on "Cheers" and "Dawson's Creek," plus premieres of "Minx" and "Manifest."

UPDATE: The ATX TV Festival announced programming changes May 17 due to the ongoing WGA writers strike. “Late Night,” “Dawson’s Creek,” “Andor” and more will no longer be included in festival programming as their creatives will not attend the event in solidarity with the guild. AUSTIN (May 15, 2023) — ATX TV Festival will return to Austin next month for its twelfth season, beginning June 1. Over four full days of programming, the annual celebration of television will honor the “Cheers” cast and creators and offer screenings of “The Righteous Gemstones,” “Manifest” and more.

Several shows will debut new episodes during festival weekend, including premieres of HBO’s “Minx” and Freeform’s “Cruel Summer.” “Justified: Primeval” will host its world premiere opening night at the Paramount.

Events will also be held at the State Theater, ACL Live and the Driskill Hotel, where the creatives behind “Austin City Limits” will discuss “50 years of making music in Austin.”

The festival will feature several guests with a diverse range of roles in the television industry, including Mark Cuban of “Shark Tank,” Seth Meyers representing “Late Night” and a number of TV-related podcast hosts. Writers of “Dawson’s Creek” will reunite as the show celebrates its 25th anniversary, and women of “Outlander” are set to discuss the legacy of the seven-season series based on the smash hit novels. Iconic director James Burrows will receive the Achievement in Television eXcellence Award for helming thousands of sitcom episodes including “Taxi,” “Friends” and “Will & Grace.”

Marketed as “TV camp for grownups” since its early seasons, the discussions that arise at ATX TV’s wide-ranging events make for an extemporaneous festival-going experience every year in downtown Austin. This year, experts in the field are set to discuss topics ranging from likable scripted characters to the fairly new role of artificial intelligence in the entertainment industry. Programs discussing women’s health, adaptations and costuming are also on the schedule. The ongoing Writers Guild of America writers strike is certain to be a subject of conversation.

From “Andor” and “Tiny Beautiful Things” to “Accused” and “Grown-ish,” this year’s programming features a balance of genres, streaming services and networks while also earning solid marks for representation.
