ATX Weekend Events Feature Free and Low Cost Activities

This weekend's featured events in and around Austin offer activities such as a symposium, an outdoor movie, and much more.

AUSTIN, TX -- Like many of us, you're probably ready and eager to get your weekend underway after a long and cold work week. Maybe you also want to find free or low-cost events to enjoy...well, look no further. The weekend is upon us and here's a guide to some interesting events happening in and around Austin. FRIDAY, FEB. 16

  • Play Groups For Kids Ages 0-3: Easterseals Central Texas will host a FREE play group for kids ages 0-3 of all abilities on Friday, Feb. 16 from 9 AM - 10:30 AM. This event is open to the public and will provide structured and free play time, opportunities to engage with peers, and a chance for parents to have fun, too!   • Symposium - Time for Timber: The University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture will host a symposium, Time for Timber on Friday, Feb. 16 from 1 PM - 6:30 PM. The symposium will explore wood as a beneficial alternative to fossil-fuel-intensive building materials through the lenses of Architecture, Engineering, and History. International experts on energy and sustainable design, including Michelle Addington, Dean of the School of Architecture, will engage in a multidisciplinary discussion addressing some of the most pressing issues of our time—man-made climate change and the need to provide housing for an ever-growing world population.   • Weekly Pilates Class for Cancer Thrivers, Survivors, and Caregivers: Cancer Rehab Austin hosts a weekly Friday class from 4 PM - 5 PM and is offered to those undergoing cancer treatment, recovering from treatment, or impacted by a loved one's cancer journey. The modified Pilates Mat Class is low impact to help you build strength, flexibility and overall body awareness.   • Despicable Me 3 - Community Cinema: Mobile Loaves & Fishes invites the community to a FREE movie screening of Despicable Me 3 on Friday, Feb. 16 beginning at 6:30 PM. Bring chairs and a blanket, invite family and friends, and enjoy a fun movie night. Hot dogs, milkshakes, popcorn, candy and drinks will be available for purchase (cash preferred). Jolt has designed a monarch butterfly to represent the dreamers and immigrants of this country who need support; this butterfly will be displayed at the upcoming "Migration Is Sweet" event later in the month at the State Capitol.   • Community Health Fair: Of the Earth Healing and Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center will host a Community Health Fair on Saturday, Feb. 17 from 3 PM - 5 PM. Students from the "Curanderismo: Indigenous Healing Workshops" volunteer to offer FREE services to the community, including: Limps/Cleansings - Have a chat with curanderos/curanderas/healers and feel/find balance; Ventosas/Cupping - Body work offered to help with circulation; Sobadas - Body work to release tension and relax muscles.   • Austin Marathon, Half Marathon, 5K: The Austin Marathon, Half Marathon, and 5K will celebrate its 27th Anniversary and will take place on Sunday, Feb. 18 beginning at 7 AM. Runners will race along open roads taking in iconic landmarks such as UT Tower, The I Love You Mural, and the Austin Power Plant. You'll also see unique Austin neighborhoods such as SOCO district and Hyde Park. The finish line will take place in front of the Texas State Capitol on Congress Avenue.   • Farmers Social: The first Farmers' Social of 2018 will be held on Sunday, Feb. 18 from 1 PM - 5 PM. This event is held every 3rd Sunday of the month and is an invitation to all farmers, artists, chefs, and creatives. The Farmers' Social is a pet-friendly, indoor/outdoor event for local creatives to showcase their talents.   • At Central Film Screening - Ex Libris: The Austin Public Library Friends Foundation and the Austin Public Library will host the At Central program's presentation of EX LIBRIS by filmmaker Frederick Wiseman as he explores one of the world's greatest institutions of learning -- The New York Public Library. The event will take place on Sunday, Feb. 18 from 2 PM - 5 PM. The film reveals a venerable place of welcome, cultural exchange, and intellectual creativity.This is Wiseman's 42nd documentary, and he was awarded and Honorary Oscar in 2016. FREE Event.
