Austin Airport Terminal Reopened After Suspicious Package Report

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport officials closed a checkpoint, closed roads leading up to a terminal as police assessed the threat.

AUSTIN, TX — Police on Friday responded to reports of a suspicious package at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport that prompted closures of checkpoint areas and the road leading to the terminal as officers investigated. Some two hours later, the area was cleared for access.

In a tweet, police said the areas around Security Checkpoint 2 were closed to accommodate their investigation. As a result, passengers were diverted to Checkpoint 1 for screening.

Patch reached out to airport spokesman Bryce Dubee, who said the suspicious package was reported a little after 10 a.m. The closed checkpoint is one of three, he noted, located in the middle of the terminal. The roadways leading up to the impacted checkpoint were closed as police investigated the potential threat posed by the package, Dubee said.

But soon into the phone interview with Patch, at around 11:50 a.m., Dubee received an update alerting the road had been reopened as police said people were able to enter the airport again. Dubee said police have scheduled a news conference at 1:30 p.m. to provide further details about the incident.

Dubee did not have information related to the package, including whether it was a piece of luggage or parcel. Patch will update this story when police provide details on Friday afternoon.
