Austin Consumer Spending Bouncing Back Amid Coronavirus

SmartAsset researchers ranked the capital city 21st among the nation's top cities where the most people are spending amid pandemic.

AUSTIN, TX — Consumer spending amid the coronavirus doldrums may not be readily apparent but a new study shows Austin ranks among the nation's top 25 cities where consumer spending has recovered the most during COVID-19.

SmartAsset researchers analyzed data for 51 of the largest U.S. cities to find where consumer spending has recovered the most during the pandemic. Analysts considered how consumer spending as of June 30 compares to both the lowest point in consumer spending during coronavirus spread and pre-pandemic spending levels in January, according to an advisory.

The upshot: Austin ranks among the top 25 cities where consumer spending has recovered the most during COVID-19. Researchers ranked the capital city 21st in terms of economic recover, sandwiched between Honolulu and Tulsa, Oklahoma. San Antonio has fared better, according to the findings, in the 17th ranking. Other Texas cities ranking highly include Dallas (ranked 26th), Fort Worth (31st), Houston (42) and El Paso (46).

The top city in terms of economic recovery, according to the study, is Detroit.
