Austin New Year's Eve 2020: Get Home Safely, Avoid DWI Risks
With Austin PDs no-refusal initiative in effect through Jan. 3, partygoers are encouraged to find safe ways to get home amid celebration.
AUSTIN, TX—Ahead of the 2020 holiday season, the Austin Police Department (APD) released data indicating their response to 86 traffic fatalities this year compared to 82 at the same time in 2020. In an effort to continue addressing safety on the City's roadways and waterways, the APD in in partnership with grants on behalf of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and no-refusal funding through the City of Austin Transportation Department, will work to ensure the number of fatalities doesn't increase ahead of 2021.
APD's no-refusal DWI initiative will run nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. through January 3, 2021. The initiative is designed to proactively encourage drivers to make responsible choices, enforce DWI laws, and to apply for blood search warrants for suspects who refuse to provide breath or blood specimen as required by law.
The close of 2020 is cause for celebration, but residents are reminded that safety should remain a top priority for all as we begin the new year. Should you find yourself impaired from driving as a result of your NYE celebrations, take advantage of the free rides and other ways to get home safely in the Austin area.
