Austin Officials: No Fireworks On New Year's Eve (Or Ever)

Fireworks are illegal in the city limits.

The Austin Fire Department are reminding citizens as New Year’s Eve approaches that fireworks are illegal in Austin city limits and violators could face a punishment.

Both the use and possession of fireworks are illegal in Austin. Offenders can be fined $500.

And if fireworks injure someone or start a fire, the firework owner can be charged with assault and arson, both felonies.

The following objects, though, are not classified as common fireworks and may be used:

  • Sparklers
  • Smoke bombs
  • Glow worms and snakes
  • Poppers, trick noisemakers, snappers

Firework complaints can be called in via 311, not 911.
