Transportation, Equity, and Austin's Future: Making the Connections: Austin's transportation future is at a crossroads. The rapid growth is leading to rising housing prices, gentrification and displacement, the suburbanization of poverty, and worsening transportation conditions. Calls for "traffic relief" along I-35 express residents' frustration with congestion but fail to put forward a transportation vision that is sustainable, resilient, healthy, and fair. And Austin voters have consistently rejected bond measures that would create high-capacity public transit (in 2000 and 2014). Heading into the November 2020 elections, CapMetro has put forward an ambitious transit vision—but will voters get on board to finance it? How can we ensure that the vision is equitable and supports the mobility needs of all Austinites? In this moderated panel discussion, local experts will discuss and debate the future of Austin transportation with a focus on the key upcoming decision points and strategies needed to put us on the right track.
