Austin Hosts Online Chicken Raising Class For Residents

The class is part of Austin Resource Recovery Rebate Program, and eligible residents may receive a rebate on a coop or composting system.

AUSTIN, TX —If you're looking for ways to become more eco-friendly, or if you're simply looking to take on a new and exciting challenge, you'll want to check out the Online Chicken Keeping Class Austin Resource Recovery Home Rebate Program.

Residents who pay the Clean Community Fee on their utility bill may qualify for a $75 rebate on any new chicken coop or home composting system by simply attending and then applying. The free online class scheduled Thursday, Oct. 22 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. offers an opportunity to answer your questions regarding keeping chickens.

The benefits of keeping chickens at home include reducing the amount of food waste ending up in the landfill by feeding them your food scraps. Each chicken can eat about seven pounds of food per month, and nutrient-rich droppings can be mixed with yard trimmings to create compost for the garden or lawn. Moreover, chickens help aerate lawns, eat pests such as larva and aphids that are harmful to laws and lay eggs for human consumption.
