A Moveable Feast: Austin Eateries Turn To Pick-Up, Delivery
A municipal order effectively closed the city's restaurants to prevent COVID-19 spread, but fine dining and comfort food can still be had.
AUSTIN, TX — In a time of coronavirus, dining out seems vaguely like an anachronism — a quaint relic from the past when strangers congregated to eat a meal in close proximity to strangers. Municipal orders effectively shutting down restaurants as a tactic promoting social distancing lends an ethereal sense to what once was in pre-pandemic times — a glorious, yet ultimately fleeting, culinary age never to return again.
But this impermanence is not so, and this too shall pass. One day, the restaurant industry in Austin will regain its vibrancy again — likely with renewed energy and a surge of patrons. In the meantime, securing the makings of fine dining is still achievable as a growing list of eateries have turned to take-out, to-go and delivery options — some of them for the first time. Eateries with existing drive-through capability will be making heavy use of the feature.
Here's something to cheer you up some more: In light of the industry paralysis caused by COVID-19, the governor has been good enough to temporaily waive a law prohbiting carry-out of alcoholic beverages from restaurants. This means you'll be able to order this too, and raise your glasses for a meaningful toast amid such uncertainty.

The forced trend aims to not only accommodate clientele hunkered down in self-isolation but as a way for restaurant operators to stay financially afloat amid the gatherings moratorium. As Mayor Steve Adler and others have said with the cadence of mantra: We'll get through this together.

So take a look at our guide to eating in a time of coronavirus, and think of this new way of dining not as inconvenience or annoyance while securing your food for the return home. Think of it instead as something different, something new perhaps. Think of it instead as a moveable feast.

In normal times (except on Sundays, when it's closed), the popularity of this burrito-focused eatery at 2828 Rio Grande St. can be seen on any given day given the throngs of largely young people packing the place for the aforementioned staple — oversize-tortilla-wrapped creations filed with one's choice of meat or chicken large enough that it could be carved out to feed a small family if necessary. A satisfying meal can be had here amid a relaxed atmosphere reminiscent of a rustic, picnic-like setting. But these are not normal times, and the throngs of exuberant, hungry, youth are not visible for now. But according to outdoors signage, one can still order a delicious burrito and other offerings from the spot for curbside pick-up. The instructions on the placard outside the place clearly delineate this new process:

1. Order supplies online at www.cabobobs.com.
2. Park, and reply to text to alert the restaurant staff of your presence.
3. "We bring it to your car."

On a recent Saturday, police cars were seen outside the joint following these instructions in securing sustenance. Cabo Bob's is also a favorite of local law enforcement, as can be seen in normal times. That Saturday, several police cars could be seen with officers awaiting their food. On the front lines of local defense, officers need to eat too, after all.
The restaurant is closed until the mandate is lifted, but its operators encourage patrons to purchase gift cards on their website to support them during this time. Each gift card purchased will receive 25 percent bonus added to the amount.

None of us could have predicted the onset of new coronavirus and its attendant impact on the restaurant indutry. The folks behind the recently opened Counter Cafe on 29th Street were similarly taken by surprise by the scourge. Two more Counter Cafe restaurants can be found on Lamar Boulevard and 6th Street, all largely specializing on breakfast and lunch selections.

These uncertain, solitary and, yes, reflective times sometimes call for some comfort food. In Austin, there are few purveyors of baked goods providing greater comfort than Julie Myrtille Bakery. "Indeed, we were working around the clock to deliver you a new website so you can order online and pick up or curbside at the Bakery," bakery officials said. It was barely a month ago that Sip Pho opened at 512 W. 29th St. where the old Ruby's BBQ long stood before it had to temporarily close due to new coronavirus. The place opened to great fanfare as word spread of the expert preparation of classic Vietnamese offerings prepared with the freshest of fresh ingredients and choicest of choice meats. Patch was invited to the soft opening on Feb. 21, yielding an all-sensory ability to give the place a sterling review. As word of its opening spread, many friends of Patch expressed an enthusiasm in sampling the delectable wares. One can still do so, as signs outside the elegant spot indicate. Its opearators had the forethought to include a takeout window to the architecture, and it's in heavy use now.

The presmise is simple: "At Sushi Hi, we combine three different cuisines to bring you meals that are hearty and healthy, all the while maintaining affordable prices and comfortable dining experience," the owners explain on their website. "We pull inspirations from Korea, Japan, and Hawaii to present to the table a variety of dishes that meet every need."
It's all true. Given the restaurant's proximity to Austin Patch headquarters, we've been there multiple times for a quick, satisfying lunch. Amid the new reality, Sushi Hi is now focused on its takeout, delivery and catering otions. Patch enjoys availing itself of the endless font of miso soup offered for free as one waits for one's food to be delivered to the table by one of the friendly staff members. It's a charming little spot located at 2912 Guadalupe St. and the telehone number is (512) 477-8433.

It's a lovely bistro serving lunch and dinner where one can walk into in during the morning hours for a freshly baked bread — pastries, muffins, scones, cookies, sandwich bread, sourdough boules, raisin pecan loaves and more — still hot from the oven. The doors are closed for now, but aficionados of its wares can still order bread to go. A sign at the door invites customers to order from the website for pickup in the parking lot. The restaurant at 2900 Rio Grande St. has pivoted to stage the TFB Garden Market, offering the aforementioned bread along with farm fresh eggs from Kris Olsen at Milagro Farm (patrons are asked to bring their own egg cartons if available) and coffee. The TFB Garden Market takes place each Sunday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. offering to-go and curbside pick-up service. Restaurant operators ask for patrons to keep a distance of six feet of one another in practicing social distancing.

We miss going inside this place in close proximity to Patch Austin headquarters, and a Patch favorite. It's a cozy spot where one passes an ample aquarium stocked with colorful exotic fish on the way to one's table. We usually keep it simple with our default chicken pad thai and Thai tea — a quick, satisfying meal we take back home for a working lunch to be doused with the Sriravha sauce atop the fridge at nearby Austin Patch headquarters.
But sometimes, we feel a little more adventurous and go for the Thai Kitchen gusto — the really spicy gusto, that is, with dishes named after the gustatory experiences they yield: Sea Cry; Nuclear Shrimp; Crying Now; Pretty But Hot; Tears But Joy; Love and Cry; Just Say No; and Never Never Again. We've had the latter repeatedly in a living rebuke of its inferred advice, slowly partaking of in the interplay between pleasure and pain rooted in its ingredients: Stir-fried shrimp, squid, scallops with hot bird pepper, garlic, fish balls, Thai basil and Thai seasoning. If having tears stream down your face while wiping one's nose repeatedly while one eats is wrong, we don't want to be right.
Serving Chinese-influenced Thai food, with lunch specials & plenty of vegetarian options, Thai Kitchen has been a fixture at 3009 Guadalupe St. since 1982. Despite the shutdown, they're still taking orders from all the major food deliverers. Check out the menu by clicking here.

In close proximity to Patch Austin headquarters, VIA 313 Pizzeria was, pre-coronavirus, always bustling with activity. A cross-section of customers — from young couples on dates to families gathered for what is, arguably, the most filling pizza offered along with other Italian fare — in invariably seen flocking into the place. The place is stilled now, just like restaurants across the city forced to close to help flatten the rate of new coronavirus spread.

Except that there's now a little corner of the outside patio area where a tent has been installed in a makeshift curbside take-out section recently installed. On a recent Saturday, patrons waited patiently outside — mindful of social distancing as they milled about — in anticipation of securing their food. A young man scrambled to fill orders, taking the time to politely answer questions from a nosey reporter asking about the new delivery system despite his frantic pace. We speak of the location at 3016 Guadalupe St., but there are two other VIA 313 locations at 1802 E. 6th St. and 700 W. 6th St.
