AUSTIN, TX — Andrew Shapter's documentary film premiere "Porvenir", is a fascinating story of a Texas town in the early part of the 20th century that ceased to exist. On the morning of January 28, 1918, fifteen fathers, uncles, brothers and sons were led from their homes in Porvenir, TX and executed as their daughters, mothers and sisters watched. The murderers then proceeded to burn the town to the ground and forced its remaining residents, mostly women and children, to flee and build new lives elsewhere.

"Porvenir" delves into identifying the killers and trying to find an explanation for why this horrific act happened. Shapter weaves a story that attempts to find answers through interviews with historians and descendants, site excavations and dramatizations. The tragedy at Porvenir, TX uncovers some of the events that led to the massacre and reveals tensions still evident over a century later.

The documentary features testimony from descendants of both victims and killers, and audiences listen to the stories that have been passed down within their families. "Porvenir" is a captivating glimpse into a significant piece of American history that has largely been ignored. Anecdotal evidence documented in the film give possible motives for why Porvenir was targeted, and assesses how the events that occurred over 100 years ago is of significance in today's society.
