Downtown Austin Eatery Holy Roller Set To Permanently Close

The popular brunch spot that has served up comfort food since 2017 has succumbed to the corrosive economic effects of pandemic.

AUSTIN, TX — The downtown Austin eatery Holy Roller will be closing permanently after brunch service next weekend, according to reports.

Austin 360 reports the owner of the eatery described as offiering cusine suffused with a sense of "creativity, whimsy and irreverance" cited the corrosive economic effects of the pandemic as the reason for the closure. Chef Callie Spear opened the spot offering comfort food in 2017, and it's been serving up dishes such as fried chicken biscuits, meatloaf sandwiches, migas kolaches and Soft Serv-topped yellow pancakes along with strong cocktails.

In its short time, the spot at 509 Rio Grande St. had become a popular stop for brunch, the website reported. The owner was able to secure a Paycheck Protection Program (PPE) loan to stay afloat, but uncertainly in the long term prompted the closure, Spear told Austin 360.
