Driver, Pedestrian Killed On Austin Roadways Identified

Police responded to separate incidents involving a driver found without a pulse near a construction site and a pedestrian struck by a car.

AUSTIN, TX — The Austin Police Department on Thursday identified a driver and pedestrian killed on Austin roadways last month.

The first incident occurred on Dec. 29 just before 10 p.m. along a service road along the 3000 block of an Ed Bluestein Boulevard service road, police wrote in an advisory. According to the police account, an officer was driving southbound on Ed Bluestein Boulevard when he passed a construction area when he noticed an oddly positioned vehicle against a concrete wall.

Upon approach, police said, the officer realized the vehicle had been involved in a crash. The officer, police said, located the sole occupant in the car but found the crash victim had no pulse as he administered CPR. Arriving medics transported the man to Dell Seton Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries, police wrote.

The crash victim was identified as 34-year-old Alan Carrillo. The man was pronounced dead at 10:43 p.m., according to the police account.

The incident marked Austin’s 87th fatal traffic crash of 2020, police said, resulting in 93 fatalities. At the time in 2019, police added, there were 87 traffic fatalities.

The following day, police said, officers were dispatched to the 7200 block of South Congress Avenue at around 6:20 p.m. amid reports of a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle. A preliminary investigation shows a white, 2003 BMW X5 was traveling southbound when the pedestrian stepped into the roadway. According to police, the driver slammed on his breaks but was unable to stop in time to avoid striking the pedestrian.

Arriving medics attempted life-saving measures but the pedestrian died at the scene, police said. The pedestrian was identified as 55-year-old Donald Langston. Police noted no charges against the driver are expected to be filed.

The incident marked the city's 88th fatal traffic crash of 2020, police said, resulting in 94 fatalities. At the time in 2019, police added, there were 87 traffic fatalities.
