ESB-MACC Hosts Opening Reception For New Exhibit
Piecing It Together: Austin Graffiti 1984-2004 looks at three generations of graffiti art and tracks its evolution and influence.
AUSTIN, TX — The Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center invites the community to "Piecing It Together: Austin Graffiti Art 1984 - 2004" an art exhibition focused on the first three generations of Austin graffiti art as the foundation for what today is referred to as street art. The exhibitions opening reception will be held Friday, Jan. 24 from 7 p.m. - 10 p.m. and will feature the sounds of DJs Notion + Hectic.
The show will be organized by each decade that helped shape Austin's vibrant Graffiti Art culture, beginning with 1984-1989 as the beginning of Austin's hip-hop culture featuring high pressure Krylon cans and painting illegally in the streets. 1990 - 1998 illustrate a rival of graffiti art with crews forming including NBK (No Boundaries Krew), as one of the most influential artists in Texas. The show will also look at the 2000's as a new era of artists that emerged to introduce evolving styles and perspectives including a broader color palette, and how the internet factored in archiving and sharing styles with broader audiences. The exhibit illustrates how the collective styles and artists created the foundation for the inclusive, diverse, and creative graffiti art we know today.
The event is free and open to the public with all ages welcome to attend. Piecing It Together: Austin Graffiti 1984-2004 will run through Saturday, March 28. For more visit the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center website.
